History

This project offering formal and non-formal vocational training had its origins in the invitation of the diocese of Chickmangalur. The project began in 1989 and the vocational training centre was fully set up by 1995 with also a boarding facility to give the opportunity for the youth from rural villages.

Activities

1. Don Bosco Technical Institute: DBTI, Hassan caters to the youth of the region for their technical education. Presently there are 206 students undergoing training in the formal and non formal sections. There are 71 trainees in Automobile (2,3,4,6 wheelers), 49 in Electrician, 48 in Electronic Mechanic, 20 in Welding and fabrication, 4 in Fitter and Turner,  and 47 in Computer Application. About 100 children and adults benefit from the spoken English course every year. We have 9 courses accredited to the National Institute of Open Schooling (NIOS).We also have a driving school.

2. Boarding: The boarding was started with a view to extend the benefits of DBTI to students from remote villages/places. There are presently 34 students staying in the hostel and learning new skills at the training institute. The inmates get opportunities for a holistic development through the different activities that are organized.

3. Youth Ministry: Orientation programmes, career guidance, personality development and leadership program-mmes are co-coordinated from this centre.
