History

The Salesian presence in Monvila began in 1990 on a plot of land donated by a retired Accountant General of Kerala, for a charitable project for poor youth. In 1996, the Salesians began the construction for a technical institute. In May 1999 a stable presence was established with a community attached to that of Manacaud. A project for the coaching school dropouts was inaugurated in 1999.

Activities

1. Re-education

This programme is only for those who do not pass the SSLC examination. The students are selected through camps conducted in the coastal and rural areas. These camps are organized at different times of the year and those identified are admitted for the programme.

The young people go through an intense period of instruction and coaching. They appear for the Class X board examination. This is the basic qualification for any further studies. The project has been able to coach more than 200 failed students back to the mainstream with this programme.

Much importance is given to the personal character formation. Behaviour modification programmes as well as intensive follow up contribute to the good results and changed lives.

2. Orphanage for Children

There is a boarding for orphan children. The children who reside in our center attend schools nearby and have a proper education as well as formation. There are 20 children who are now in class VII. These children are trained till they complete class X.

Tsunami Relief

During the last year eighty five percent of the children and youth in the programme belong to the fishermen community. For the coming year the project has decided to take into the programme children from affected families both for the Re-education and Orphanage.
