The Salesian presence in Chitradurga began on 12th June 1995. Considering the need of the hour and the scope of the place, a school building and hostel have been built for the integral development of the poor and the young. A welfare project- CHITHRA (Centre for Human Intervention & Training in Holistic Rural Action) has been initiated.

Activities

Don Bosco School: Don Bosco School, Chitradurga, is at present a Primary School in the Kannada medium. A High School in the English medium has been applied for. The school has 410 students on rolls, of which 240 are boys and 170 girls.

Boarding: The community also runs a  boarding for poor village children from classes V to VII. There are 131 children in the boarding.

CHITHRA

A welfare project, titled Centre for Human Intervention and Training in Holistic Rural Action,has been initiated with various socio-developmental, educational and cultural activities for the uplift of the poor and the marginalized, irrespective of caste, creed or social status. The activities carried out are the following:

1. Mobile Medical Clinic which regularly visits 14 villages for 3 to 4 hours in the mornings and evenings. So far 9500 cases have been treated, and Preventive Health and Treatment Programmes have been conducted.  

 2. Supervised Study and Evening Tuition in 14 villages covering 1300 children with the help of 31 part-time teachers.
 

4. Anganvadis (Crèches): There are creches run in 4 villages and above 200 children below 5 years of age beneft. This enables the mothers of these children to go for work as well as the elder children especially girls to go for regular education.       

5. Mahila Mandals (Women’s Groups): There are 29 such groups in 9 villages comprising of 280 women. They are in the process of evolving into Co-operatives.
 

6. Vocational Training Centres: There are 5 tailoring centres in 5 villages with about 110 young women in training. Another centre in Chitradurga has 25 girls attending it.  
 

7. Youth Clubs: They are functioning in 10 villages with recreational facilities and motivational training sessions.
