History
While the Salesians were looking for a presence in the Wynad region there was also the request from the diocese of Kottayam to start a vocational training school in the area for the benefit of the local people. The construction work of the buildings for different trades was completed and classes were started by 2001.
Activities
1. Vocational Training
To provide skills to the young people of the area formal and non formal vocational training is imparted through the project. The trades offered are:
Computer Courses. There are a number of computer courses like, Office Automation Course, D.T.P., O’ Level Computer Course of DOEACC Delhi, PGDCA etc. The duration of the courses vary from 3 months to 1 year.
Automobile Engineering. In the automobile section currently we have two types of courses, a short course of 6 months duration (ATM) and Mechanic Motor Vehicle (MMV) of one year duration. The students who pass out successfully are given ITES (Indian Technical Education Society – Mumbai) certificate and All India Don Bosco Board of Technical Education (AIDBBTE) certificate. Our average intake for both the courses is 25 to 30 in every batch.
Electrical Engineering. In the electrical section also we have two types of courses, a 6 months course and a one year course. We have an average intake of 15 students per batch for both the courses. They are given ITES –Mumbai and AIDBBTE certificates.
Information Technology and Electronics.
Taking into consideration the demand for IT in the present times, this course is organized to give equal emphasis to Information Technology and Electronics. The duration of the course is one year and our average intake is 15 per year. They get ITES and AIDBBTE certificates.
Welding. Workshop Technician is the name of the course organized in two modules. The students can either do a 6 months course or a one year course. The syllabus includes Arc Welding, Gas Welding, Lathe practice and Fitter practice. ITES and AIDBBTE certificates are issued for them. An average of 10 students attend each of these courses at a time.
Secretarial Practice. The institute offers an integrated multi skill training course for secretaries. The syllabus includes Typing, Computer, Stenography, Office accounting with Tally, Spoken English etc. The course has currently 11 students.
Thus a total of 119 students (108 boys and 11 girls) are undergoing training in the different trades.
2. Academic College.
To meet the ever growing need for higher education in computer and other professional studies, the centre has started courses like BCA, MCA, M Sc IT, and MBA. Now there are 72 boys and 34 girls doing the above courses.
3. Other Activities
There are evening tuition classes for the poor children of the neighbourhood. There are 35 students benefiting from this programme.
