History

Don Bosco Cultural Centre, Vennala, was established in 1983 for the purpose of training poor but talented boys in music, dance and the performing arts. A training in printing technology Press too was begun at the same time for the purpose of training young people in printing technology and the publication of good books. This aspect of training was discontinued for some time, but was revived in 1995 under the new name of DBIGACT (Don Bosco Institute of Graphic Arts Communication Technology). Later, a library, open to the public, was added. A small Youth Centre also has been revived, with about 30 members in regular attendance.

 

Activities

 

1. The Press

There are two sections of work in the press. There is the training in printing technology, which prepares the students for taking up printing works either by themselves or getting employed in an outside press. There is also a production unit where orders are taken and jobs done. This helps in the training of the students.  At present we conduct a two-year course in printing technology and the computer section is recognized by the government from the scholastic year 2001-2002. There are 60 students being trained here. 

2. The Cultural Center (DBCC)

The cultural center came into existence in 1982. It was already functioning from Don Bosco Palluruthy. We give training to boys, who are talented in performing arts. They are given training mainly in classical music, classical dance, ottanthullal (form of traditional dance), and they learn different musical instruments like keyboard, harmonium, violin, guitar, tabla, mrudangam, chenda (local names for different forms of drums).

3. Boarding

There are 56 students in the boarding who attend the school in the town. They do the training in dance and music in the morning and evening hours.

4. Don Bosco Library

The library which is open to the public has special focus on school and college going students. This aims at retaining and increasing reading habit as well as make available good and useful materials for the young people.

5. Youth Center

The youth come mainly to make use of the recreational facilities. There are 65 youth regularly coming to the youth centre. The institution also provides religious services conducted are of great spiritual help to the people of the neighbourhood.
